Names

Have you ever asked a parent when they were expecting or just had a child what their child's name was and cringed a bit? I had that experience over the weekend. I cringed and I feel bad for it. Of course I bit my lip (after the cringe) and wished the parents well on their new little bundle of joy.

Obviously I am happy for any parent to welcome a new child but I need to stop asking about names and find some other question to make small talk with acquaintances. I could hate the name because it happens to be the same name of the slut who stole my eighth grade boyfriend or the guy who wore a cape everyday at school. Perhaps the reason these people named their child "X" is because it is a family name or a name they've always loved. Who knows?

There are just perfectly good names in my book that I could just never use. I love the name Zach. If I had another son could I name my son that? No. That would be weird since my husband stole me away from a guy that has that name. I also love the name Jon...at least I did. Jon and Zach were my two favorite names growing up. I named my male barbie dolls with those names! Nothing against my friend's husband (who is also my friend), but my son currently has the same name of another friend's husband who happens to be in the same group of friends. I can't very well go down the line and name my sons (if I have more sons) with the same names as my best girlfriends husbands. It is a bit weird. I would almost feel obligated to name any other sons after my single friends find their husbands. What if their names were Jedidiah or Jamal? I would have to use nicknames like Jedi (it would be a must...come on) and Jam. Just joking, but you get the point.

Again, not their fault I hate their daughter's name. They are very good people. Lovely people. I just cringe at her name, but I'll get used to it. Maybe she'll make the name lovely again as other names have been "reborn" to me in a different light after meeting good people.

Speech

For months now I pondered what to do...do I take him or not take him? Now I have decided to go ahead with it. I am going to take my son to get evaluated for his speech. He says a few words here and there, but in comparison to his peers that are around two years old...he does not speak as much as they do. Around twenty words or so, but as much as I work with him and make it as fun as possible (songs and dance) my son can not say any words that start with "B" or "P".

For a while now I thought perhaps my son is like his Dad and he is just quiet (at times). He articulates well and follows most direction (we're in that "mine" phase so following directions on that all the time is not so great). I just wonder if I am being an overly protective parent or not a proactive enough parent when it comes to this situation. He took his time to crawl, walk and do some other milestones. He could do them I think way ahead of when he actually did it, but just did not feel like it. When he first crawled, he crawled across the room. There are pros and cons to knowing I have a stubborn child...

I decided in the end what can hurt with getting an evaluation? If anything they tell me he's fine and just wait a few months to see if there is any progress. If not then it gives him the early therapy he needs.

Things I Never Thought I Would Say...

Before becoming a parent you have a romantic idea on what it is going to be like. I had those ideas and also realized (thankfully) that parenting is not all fun and games, but one of the hardest (yet rewarding) jobs I will ever do. I thought about after saying a few phrases this weekend to either my husband, family or even son that I would never imagine myself saying them three years ago. Nothing vulgar...just the world of parenting.

I figured I'd list a few of these I remember saying over the last several months...and add your own if you'd like.

Here it goes:

~ Hon, he is sitting on my head. Help.

~ You have fuzz in your snot. Ewww!

~ Looks like you had corn at day care.

~ We need to be nice to friends. We are not vampires so please don't bite.

~ I just caught an older woman (of four) kissing our son. He's only two!

~ Monsters aren't scary. Elmo is a monster and he isn't scary.

~ To get a meal to myself without little hands stealing it or wanting it is bliss!

~ Crap he's tall enough to open the front door (...running)

~ (said to a six year old girl about my son who wanted to play) He can't come outside right now. I am cooking dinner and he's not allowed out by himself.

~ I'm being bossed around by a two year old. Sit here. Go here.

~ I deal with poop all day. The dogs poop, my son's poop and lets not forget when I have time to poop I have to deal with that too.

~ Sports bras equal the new paci holders...and it wasn't discovered by me.

~ It would be nice to talk to a recruiter when I was home, but that would require my son to be able to say hello first before I can talk...I don't think that would fly very well.

~ Your iphone is in the Mickey plane.

The list could go on and on with things I'd never think I'd say. I am amazed everyday how my little guy...my heart with legs...can just turn my world completely upside down. I love it though : )

Spinning Wheels Is Never Fun

Do you have days, weeks or even longer where you just feel like you're just spinning your wheels? Like whatever task you set out to do or whatever goal you set, something either comes in the way of it to completely nix the idea or prolongs it? I am having that life spin the wheels moment.

I am a goal setter and a goal minder. I am one of those people that love set goals, plans out for them, and literally bends over backwards to achieve them. However, I hate road blocks. I hate those things that just come up. Like I said, I'll bend backwards but I can't do the impossible.

I guess all I can do is pray...
